Many people see aging as a negative, even terrifying, thing. As we get older, our faces and bodies naturally change. It’s a part of life that can be hard to accept.
Although I believe aging is a beautiful thing, I understand that many people aren’t exactly thrilled when they look in the mirror and see sagging skin. This is especially the case when you notice the appearance of jowls.
The good news is that there are a lot of modern innovations and holistic beauty regimens that can help define and sculpt your facial features. Facial massage is a natural, humble technique that can boost collagen production, stimulate blood flow, relieve tension in the face, and remove excess fluid to de-puff your face.
But can facial massage help jowls? And if so, how do you target those specific facial muscles to reduce the appearance of jowls? I’m dedicating this post to revealing the answers to those questions and more. Let’s get into it!
Can Facial Massage Help Jowls?
Yes, facial massage can help jowls. But, not all facial massages work the same. Two types of face massage effectively target jowls: facial lifting massage and buccal massage.
Before we get into facial massage techniques, let’s take a minute to understand more about jowls. This way, you can find the best facial massage for you.
What Are Jowls?
The word “jowls” refers to the loose, sagging skin along the lower jawline and chin. Jowls vary in severity and appearance. Generally, they make you look “older” and cause your jawline to look less defined. Some people have subtle jowls that are barely noticeable, while others have jowls that are more pronounced and change the look of their entire face.
Most people develop jowls as they age, with them typically appearing in middle-aged people. Jowls often appear with other signs of aging, like fine lines and wrinkles.
What Causes Jowls?
Several factors contribute to the appearance of jowls, including:
- Aging
- Sun damage
- Smoking
- Genetics
- Sleep position
- Weight fluctuations
- Poor skincare habits
Facial Lifting Massage For Jowls
Never underestimate the power of facial massage! Face-lifting massage techniques use targeted, repetitive movements to improve blood circulation. They work by applying firm pressure to areas of your face that are holding a lot of tension.
I’ve spent years studying various facial massage techniques and believe strongly in their ability to produce real results. In fact, I’m such a fan of facial massage that I offer training and learning for holistic estheticians.
Facial massage is a fantastic and effective, drug-free, non-invasive way to dramatically improve your skin. Not only does it improve muscle tone to support, lift, and soften your facial features, but it also promotes lymphatic drainage to improve circulation.
Facial lifting massage can also speed up the turnover of your skin cells to give you an instant glow and lift. Plus, it’s incredibly relaxing and calming. You can give yourself an amazing facial massage in as little as five minutes, or treat yourself to a 10 to 20-minute massage for a real treat. The most important thing, when it comes to seeing results, is regularity.
All that said, there are a few things to consider before giving yourself a face massage. If you have super-sensitive skin, active acne, inflamed rosacea, or sun-damaged skin, you should hold off on getting a facial lifting massage.
Additionally, while you don’t necessarily need anything other than your hands to perform a face massage, oil and massage tools can improve your experience. You can use a natural, plant-based oil and either a gua sha stone or jade roller, but again, these aren’t absolutely necessary.
Now, let’s get into how to give yourself a facial lifting massage to improve the appearance of jowls.
Step 1: Cleanse & Moisturize
Start by cleaning your skin with a gentle cleanser or oil, then rinse with lukewarm water. Use circular motions to “wake up” your skin and prep it for the massage. Gently pat your face dry, then apply your favorite face oil.
Step 2: Neck & Lymph Area
Start the massage by gently applying pressure to the area right below your ear, behind your jaw, known as the lymph area. This will help release toxins that drain from your face to your lymph nodes.
Using the tips of your fingers, lightly press and draw circles under each of your eyes to stimulate your lymph nodes. Then, draw large, downward circles from each ear, down the side of your neck until you reach the area just above your collarbone, toward your chin.
Then, using your thumbs, apply pressure underneath your chin and slide up, toward your ears. Repeat this upward and outwards motion several times to target the lymph area and stimulate your lymphatic system.
Step 3: Chin & Lower Face
Next, you want to focus on your chin and lower face. Using your fingertips, apply gentle pressure from the middle of your chin on each side, then slide your fingers upward toward your ears.
Next, massage wide circles into your cheek area, working upward in a lifting motion. Remember to take long, deep breaths as you massage each area.
Step 4: Mouth
Next, use your index fingers and thumbs to massage the area around your lips. Gently pull and knead the muscles on either side of your mouth, in the areas where frown lines typically appear. You can also massage small kneads around your mouth to naturally plump your lips.
Step 5: Nose, Eyes, & Forehead
From there, apply gentle pressure to either side of your nose and push firmly up your midline to your brow. Then, use your index fingers to pinch the area at the top of your nose.
Then, move to the area around your eyes. Use sweeping motions to massage above and below your eyes, toward your ears. Finish with sweeping and circular motions across your forehead.
Repeat these movements for 1-2 minutes for a relaxing, natural lift.
