I’m a huge proponent of following a skincare routine. I’m even more passionate about following a minimalist skincare routine. Taking care of your skin is one of the best ways to love yourself. I’m also big on minimalism. But being a minimalist doesn’t mean abandoning your skincare routine altogether.

As the name of my blog suggests, I’m passionate about educating others on clean, clear processes for your skin as well as your overall well-being. Skin minimalism matches that vibe. It’s a growing trend that’s all about achieving healthy and glowing skin while respecting and taking care of the planet. It’s a win-win if you ask me!

From the minute I heard about skin minimalism, I knew it was a trend I could hop on board with. And as I learned more about it, I grew increasingly anxious to share it with you. So, let’s get into it, shall we?

What is Skin Minimalism?

These days, less is more! Skin minimalism, or “skinimalism,” is a beauty trend that embraces simplifying your skincare and creating a beauty regimen that helps you achieve healthy, radiant skin using only products that you deem necessary. The term skinimalism began spreading on TikTok and social media pages in early 2021, but now it’s fully embraced by the beauty industry.

The trend encourages you to downsize your lengthy, complex skincare routine and instead adopt a course of treatment consisting, usually, of just three to five products. The number of products used depends on your skin type and skin care needs. You can officially say goodbye to the 10-step beauty routines that were popularized by influencers in recent years.

When it comes to skinimalism, there are no set rules to follow. Instead, it’s about keeping your skincare routine as simple as you can, using as few products as possible. Rather than a handful of multiple products, the most basic skinimalism routine includes just three: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

There are several benefits to following the skin minimalism trend. For one, you can stop wasting money on products that you barely use. This benefits both your wallet and the environment since there will be fewer products left to run off into the environment.

Secondly, skinimalism saves you time that you would otherwise spend on a complex skincare routine. Additionally, and perhaps my favorite benefit of this beauty trend, is that it encourages you to embrace the real, unfiltered, natural you. It’s about allowing your natural beauty to shine through, rather than covering it up with a mini-fridge full of products.

Does Skinimalism Work?

Yes! Skinimalism works! Using fewer products allows your skin to breathe and decreases the likelihood of skin irritation. It also lets you maximize the benefits of the products you are using.

There are a few things to keep in mind when switching to a minimal skincare routine:

  • Be cautious when combining active ingredients
    • As you decide which products to include in your routine, keep in mind that some active ingredients work against each other, some enhance one another, and others are practically the same.
  • Everyone’s skin is different; what works for someone else might not work for you.
    • As I share the steps to a skinimalism routine, keep in mind that this trend popularizes a very basic, three-step process. It might work wonderfully for you, or you might need to include a fourth or even fifth step to take good care of your skin. There’s no shame in that!
  • Quality over quantity, always.
    • Using fewer products with high-quality active ingredients is far better for your skin than using multiple products with lower-quality ingredients.

Skin Minimalism Steps

Step 1: Cleanse

Any healthy skincare routine should begin with a good cleansing. For people with healthy skin, water can be an effective enough cleanser.

If you prefer to use a cleanser, I highly recommend using a gentle cleanser that won’t disrupt or harm the skin barrier. For a reputable beauty brand with high-quality cleansers, consider Marie Veronique and Grown Alchemist. They both offer fantastic products that I recommend every chance I get.

Step 2: Moisturize

Your skin craves moisture just as much as the rest of your body. When your skin is adequately hydrated, it not only looks and feels better, but it works better. Moisturizer is an important part of any daily skincare routine, whether your skin feels dry or not.

Two wonderful moisturizers to consider are Grown Alchemist’s Hydra-Repair Day Cream and Osea’s Advanced Protection Cream.

Step 3: Protect

Sunscreen is the one skincare product with the undeniable ability to prevent aging and support healthy skin. To protect the tone, texture, and overall health of your skin, be sure to include a high-quality, daily broad-spectrum SPF.

I like to use Suntegrity SPF because it’s a tinted SPF that protects my skin and allows me to skip applying foundation.

Skin minimalism, or skinimalism, is a beauty trend I support and one that I hope is here to stay.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this beauty trend. Have you considered minimizing your skincare routine? Do you think skinimalism is a trend worth trying? Share in the comments!
